Adderley Street Stunning Christmas Lights Cape Town 2025: Top Insider Tips

The Adderley Street Christmas lights in Cape Town are a festive tradition I’ve cherished since childhood. Growing up, I would visit on my birthday, counting down the hours until my birthday was over. Last year, after all the Christmas Day family festivities, I went again-this time with my boyfriend. Walking along the illuminated street felt nostalgic and magical.

Getting to Adderley Street

Adderley Street is in the heart of Cape Town’s city center, making it easy to reach by car or on foot. Public transport in the evenings isn’t very reliable, so taking an Uber, Bolt, or Lyft is usually the easiest way to get there at night. If you’re driving, parking can be limited, so plan ahead.

Visitor Tips & Essential Info

Photography: Capture the reflections, decorations, and festive moments, but stay alert and mindful of your surroundings.

Dates: The lights usually switch on around 30 November, following the official switching-on festival, and stay lit until early January.

Cost: Visiting is completely free, making it an easy outing for locals and tourists alike.

Night Market & Flower Market: Along the street, a night market offers festive snacks and drinks, and the flower market is open too — you can buy a single bloom or a whole bouquet. Bring cash, as not all vendors accept cards.

Best Time to Visit: Evening is ideal-after dinner or holiday celebrations- when the lights shine brightest and crowds are smaller.

Walking & Safety: Wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestones, stay aware of cars driving through parts of the street, and keep an eye on your belongings.

Weather: Nights can be windy, so check the weather before you go. In December, most evenings are mild, so a light jacket is usually enough.

Even as a local, the tradition never gets old. There’s something magical about seeing the lights come alive and if you are able to you should check them out. It’s free and fun plus the weather is great during Decemeber and it’s lovely to walk outside.

Thanks for reading and I hope you have a wonderful festive season.
