What Are the Best Winter Activities in Cape Town?

It’s winter in Cape Town. Despite being bundled up as much as possible, I’m still feeling the chill. I’m definitely a summer person and not a fan of winter weather. Since I can’t escape to a warmer place right now, I decided to focus on the great things that happen during Cape Town’s winter. As I worked on this blog post, I found that thinking about these winter highlights made me feel a bit better about the rainy season.

Warm Drinks

Cape Town boasts a vibrant tea scene, and you can enjoy excellent coffee and superb hot chocolate during the colder months. I love Honest Chocolate’s hot chocolate. Why not indulge in a hot chocolate tasting? Don’t forget to try rooibos tea with honey and lemon. Not only is it delicious, but rooibos also has numerous health benefits, being a locally grown staple. Check out the coffee and tea tours in Cape Town here.

Wine tasting

Winter is an excellent time to explore the wine estates around Cape Town. The cooler weather makes for a cozy atmosphere in tasting rooms, and many estates offer special winter promotions. Whether you’re a connoisseur or a casual wine enthusiast, you’ll find plenty of options to suit your taste. Estates such as Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, known for their picturesque vineyards, offer unique winter deals and events. These specials might include discounted tastings, exclusive wine releases, or paired meals that highlight seasonal ingredients. A visit to these estates can turn a dreary winter day into a delightful adventure.

Whale Watching

Winter is whale season, and Cape Town offers some of the best whale-watching opportunities. Hermanus, just outside Cape Town, is renowned for its incredible whale sightings, attracting visitors from around the world. During winter, you can also spot these magnificent creatures along the False Bay coast, which includes the charming towns of Kalk Bay and Simon’s Town. From July to September, these areas offer prime whale-watching conditions, where you might see southern right whales breaching and playing in the waters. Local operators provide boat tours that offer a closer look at these gentle giants, making it a memorable winter experience.

Beaches

While the weather may be too chilly for swimming, the beaches of Cape Town take on a different kind of charm during winter. With fewer tourists around, you can enjoy a serene walk along the shore, collecting seashells or simply taking in the dramatic winter sea views. The cool weather and overcast skies often create a moody, atmospheric backdrop for stunning photographs. If you prefer to stay warm, many beachfront restaurants offer cozy indoor seating with panoramic views of the ocean, where you can watch the waves crash while sipping on a hot drink or enjoying a hearty meal.

Surfing

Winter brings a new set of opportunities for surfing enthusiasts. The colder months often bring better waves and more consistent swells, making it an ideal time for surfers looking to catch some action. For those who haven’t yet taken the plunge into surfing, winter can be a great time to start. Local surf schools offer lessons suited to all levels, and the more experienced surfers can enjoy less crowded waves. Kite surfing and other adventure sports also benefit from the winter swells, providing an exciting challenge for those seeking adrenaline-pumping activities.

Specials

Winter is the perfect time to enjoy great food specials around Cape Town. Col’Cacchio, a Italian restaurant chain, is known for its deals, where you can enjoy delicious pizza or pasta dishes at a great price. I also once had a wonderful time enjoying The Raj in Campus Bay’s special. Many other restaurants also offer winter promotions, from set menus to discounted meals, making it a fantastic season for food lovers to explore new dining experiences. Don’t forget to check out local eateries and cafes that may have seasonal specials or themed nights to warm up your winter evenings.

Fewer Crowds

One of the best things about winter in Cape Town is the reduced number of tourists. Major attractions like the Cape wheel and popular museums are much less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed experience. While shopping malls might still be busy, you’ll find shorter queues and a more pleasant atmosphere at many other popular spots.

Cool Indoor Activities

Cape Town’s winter weather provides a perfect excuse to explore a range of indoor activities. If you’re looking for some action, rock climbing gyms, bowling alleys, and karaoke bars offer a fun way to stay entertained. For a unique experience, try indoor cave mini-golf at the V&A Waterfront or visit the Scratch Patch in Simon’s Town to hunt for semi-precious stones. Movie buffs can enjoy films at the Labia Theatre, known for its independent films, or catch the latest blockbusters at the IMAX in Brackenfell. Museums like the Holocaust Centre, District Six Museum, and Zeitz MOCAA offer fascinating exhibitions that provide insight into history and contemporary art. For a more hands-on experience, try gin brewing at Distillers Union or tour the Newlands Brewery. And if shopping is on your agenda, Canal Walk is one of Africa’s largest malls, but local markets like the Old Biscuit Mill and the Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay offer unique finds and live music. Winter also presents a great time to relax in one of Cape Town’s many spas or enjoy a meal by a cozy indoor fireplace.

Festivals and markets

Cape Town bursts with energy during winter thanks to a variety of festivals and markets. The Jive Cape Town Funny Festival, held every June, brings humour and entertainment to the city, showcasing local and international comedians in a lively setting. For a more recent addition to the city’s winter events, check out Kuier at the Castle, a vibrant market offering unique crafts, food, and live entertainment. If you’re a fan of craft beverages, the Gin Festival is a must-visit, celebrating South Africa’s burgeoning gin scene with tastings, mixers, and expert insights. With so many events happening throughout the winter months, there’s always something exciting to experience in Cape Town.

Milder Weather

Cape Town’s winter temperatures, averaging between 18-20°C, offer a refreshing change from the icy cold winters found in Europe and North America. The relatively mild climate allows for outdoor activities without the biting cold, and on particularly warm days, temperatures can reach up to 25°C. Compared to the freezing winters in places like Germany, Cape Town’s winter feels almost like an extended spring, making it a pleasant time to enjoy the city’s outdoor and indoor attractions alike.

The cooler winter weather is ideal for hiking, with the added benefit of lush, green landscapes and spectacular views. After rain, the waterfalls along some hiking routes become particularly stunning, creating picturesque scenes that enhance the natural beauty of Cape Town’s trails. Popular hiking spots like Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, and the Constantia Greenbelt offer diverse trails suitable for all levels of hikers, making winter an excellent time to explore these natural wonders.

Cape Town’s winter season brings a vibrant display of blooming wildflowers, adding a burst of colour to the city’s landscape. From August to September, the West Coast Nature Reserve and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens come alive with a stunning array of orange, white, and yellow wildflowers. These blooms not only brighten up the winter landscape but also provide a wonderful opportunity for nature enthusiasts and photographers to capture the city’s floral beauty. The seasonal flower displays are a testament to Cape Town’s rich biodiversity and offer a delightful contrast to the grey winter skies.
