How to enjoy Cape Town Carnival a guide from a local

Cape Town Carnival is just around the corner! This Mardi Gras-style festival, held on March 16th, is free to attend and promises an unforgettable experience. The parade will take over the Fan Walk in Green Point, showcasing whimsical floats, vibrant dancers, and lively marchers. This year’s theme, VUKA UKHANYE! Rise ‘n Shine, encourages everyone to awaken their potential and step up their game. Over 2,000 performers and musicians will bring the streets to life, and the family-friendly after-party will feature some of South Africa’s hottest acts.

Reflecting on my experience with the Cape Town Carnival, I’ve been both a participant and a spectator. In 2011, I was part of the carnival dressed as a sailor girl, waving from a boat float. I enjoyed the vibrant creativity of the event, although I did have some issues with costume fittings and makeup. Despite these hiccups, the warm and friendly atmosphere in Cape Town made it a memorable experience. The carnival not only provides entertainment but also supports local employment, albeit seasonally. Have Fun
Dress up and immerse yourself in the fun. While a full costume isn’t necessary, consider a fun wig, face paint, or Mardi Gras beads to get into the spirit. I don’t always dress up but, I do try to wear bright colours.

Get There Early
The Cape Town Carnival attracts hundreds of spectators. Arrive early to secure a good viewing spot. The parade starts at 7 pm, but early celebrations start at 3 pm. You can also enjoy the parade from an elevated restaurant along the Fan Walk. There are also tickets you can buy to have a better viewing spot.

Wear Comfy Shoes
With street closures and lots of walking, comfortable shoes are a must. You’ll be on your feet during the parade and the lively after-party, so make sure your footwear is comfortable.

Avoid Drinking on the Street
It is illegal to drink in the streets of Cape Town. You can get arrested so skip it and have drinks after the carnival parade.

Keep Kids Close
The large crowds can be overwhelming for children. Hold their hands or use a child harness to keep them safe and close.

Eat Beforehand
Food stalls are available, but due to the crowds, it’s best to have a light meal before you arrive. Carry snacks and water, as it can get hot and bottled water can be pricey.

Stay Safe
Pickpocketing can occur in large crowds. Always keep your belongings secure and avoid placing valuables in easily accessible pockets. If you are carrying a bag hold it close or get a lock for you zips.

Check the Weather
Cape Town weather can be unpredictable. In March, temperatures range from 15°C to 27°C (59°F to 80°F). Bring a light jacket or shawl for cooler evening temperatures.

Charge Your Devices
Make sure that your phone is fully charged and consider bringing a power bank to keep it topped up. You’ll want to capture plenty of photos and videos.

Set Up a Meeting Point
With the noise and crowd, it’s easy to get separated from your group. Create a designated meet-up spot so that you can find each other if needed.

The costumes of participants are nice and comfortable more especially girls. People are going to have high anticipation about the event even though personally never attended one but could tell that whom ever is will be attending is going to have lot of fun and learn a lot.
