During my Christmas break while living in Germany, I decided to visit my Dutch big ‘sis’, Monique. She is a close family friend cities. That’s how I ended up in Tilburg, a charming place in the southern Netherlands. What I didn’t expect was that I’d go on a safari and learn about the city’s textile heritage all in one trip!
Safaripark Beekse Bergen – A Safari in the Netherlands
If you ever dreamed of going on safari but didn’t think you could do it in Europe, Safaripark Beekse Bergen will change your mind. Just outside Tilburg, this vast park brings the feeling of an African adventure to the Netherlands.
You can explore by car, bus, boat, or on foot. I walked part of the route and couldn’t believe how close you could get to the animals. Lions, giraffes, zebras, and elephants all roam spacious enclosures designed to resemble their natural habitats.
It reminded me so much of safaris back home in South Africa, and it made my birthday weekend feel extra special. There’s even a night safari in some seasons and quirky treats like chocolate with edible worms for adventurous visitors.

I usually approach animal experiences with caution, as I’m mindful of ethics and animal welfare. While Safaripark Beekse Bergen takes clear steps toward conservation and animal care, I encourage fellow travelers to always ask questions and choose attractions that prioritize animal wellbeing.
Textiel Museum – Where Art and Industry Meet
Another highlight of my Tilburg trip was the Textiel Museum, a must-visit for anyone who loves design, history, or fashion. The museum is housed in a former textile factory, beautifully updated with a modern glass façade. Inside, you’ll see everything from traditional weaving looms to cutting-edge textile art installations.
I even got to try sitting at a loom myself — not as easy as it looks! The staff were welcoming and explained how Tilburg’s textile industry shaped the city’s identity.

A Few More Things to Do in Tilburg
If you have extra time, Tilburg also offers great museums like Museum De Pont for contemporary art, Nature Museum Brabant near the train station, and the Spoorzone area-a creative district filled with cafés and local shops.
Why Visit Tilburg
Tilburg might not be as famous as Amsterdam or Rotterdam, but that’s exactly what makes it special. It’s laid-back, authentic, and full of creativity. It’s also far less crowded. Whether you’re visiting for a quick weekend trip or just passing through, it’s worth adding to your Netherlands itinerary.
