Known for its artsy, bohemian vibe, Maboneng has quickly become a hotspot for urban artists, and one of its defining features is the abundance of stunning murals that adorn the area’s walls. The name “Maboneng,” derived from the seSotho word meaning “place of light,” is a fitting tribute to this district’s creative energy and its role as a beacon for artists in Johannesburg.

This dynamic neighborhood pulses with energy, offering a mix of restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, art galleries, and studio spaces. Maboneng attracts not only the inner-city locals but also trendy, art-loving crowds from the suburbs, helping breathe new life into a once-overlooked part of downtown Johannesburg. Today, it’s a key player in the city’s tourism scene, drawing both local and international visitors who come to explore its creative offerings. With its eclectic and inclusive atmosphere, Maboneng is a must-visit destination—whether you’re a local, a tourist, or someone who simply appreciates urban art.

My Maboneng Mural Adventure

On my trip to Johannesburg, I decided to visit Maboneng specifically to explore its murals. As a huge fan of mural art, I find murals to be a unique and accessible form of artistic expression that connects people to art in a way that traditional galleries sometimes don’t. Murals bring art to the streets, allowing people who might not usually step foot in an art gallery to engage with creativity in a public space. I went with my partner, who was in Johannesburg for his cousin’s wedding, while I opted out of visiting restaurants and shops to save.

If you’re a fan of contemporary African art and design, make sure to visit the Museum of African Design (MOAD), one of the newest additions to the precinct. This urban museum space showcases African design and art, adding another layer of creativity to the area.

Walking through Maboneng was an exciting experience. The streets were filled with vibrant works of art, but I did feel the need to be cautious. While I felt safe walking around with my partner, I wouldn’t recommend exploring the area alone, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the neighbourhood. It’s best to visit with a companion or consider booking a walking tour to get the full experience while staying safe. Also, visiting during the day is ideal—not only for safety reasons but also to fully appreciate the colourful murals in daylight.

One moment that stood out during our visit was when we were sitting in the car with the window down, and a local warned us to keep the windows closed. It’s a small precaution to keep in mind while exploring the area, but overall, Maboneng is a welcoming and vibrant place.

Serge One’s Elephant Mural

While exploring Maboneng, I had the chance to see the work of Serge One, a graffiti artist who is deeply committed to creating murals that inspire and reflect community. Serge views graffiti not just as art, but as a tool for empowerment, particularly for young people. He teaches graffiti as a means of self-expression, helping young people tap into their creativity and use it as a tool for personal growth. Serge is also the founder of One Love Studio in Muizenberg, a creative space dedicated to graffiti and illustration.

One of the murals I encountered during my visit was a striking piece by Serge, featuring elephants. This mural perfectly captures his passion for blending artistic expression with cultural significance. Elephants, often seen as symbols of wisdom and strength, are beautifully brought to life in his mural, connecting the viewer with both the beauty of nature and the power of community.

Nardstar’s Vibrant Storytelling

I’m also a huge fan of Nardstar and her captivating artwork, so I was beyond excited to see her murals in Maboneng. Known for her bold use of color and powerful storytelling, Nardstar’s pieces resonate with me on a deep level. Her work is more than just visually stunning—it’s a reflection of culture, identity, and social commentary. As I explored her murals, I was drawn to the vibrant energy of her art, which invites conversation and connection. Nardstar’s murals are a celebration of community and identity, and they add a unique, colorful layer to the dynamic landscape of Maboneng.

How to Get There

Maboneng is easy to reach by car from Johannesburg’s M1 South. Simply take the M2 East off-ramp, followed by the Joe Slovo off-ramp. Continue to the Market Street off-ramp, turn right, and cross over one set of traffic lights. At the next set of lights, turn right into Betty Street, then immediately turn right into Fox Street. If you’re relying on public transportation, taxis and options like Uber are widely available throughout the city.
