If you’ve ever dreamed of wandering through twinkling Christmas markets filled with festive cheer, let me take you on a journey through my time living in Germany. Coming from the sunny shores of Cape Town, experiencing the enchanting Christmas markets was a holiday highlight that I’ll cherish forever. However, as someone from a place that doesn’t experience snowfall, I was a bit intimidated by the idea of venturing out in the snow. I remember asking my Russian friend, Anastasia, if it was safe to walk outside when the snow began to fall, and she just laughed at me. But I quickly learned how to dress warmly, and now I’m excited to share my guide with you.
Cozy Warm Jackets
Start with a high-quality insulated jacket. I discovered several warm jackets that not only kept me toasty but also looked great! Opt for one that strikes a balance between functionality and fashion, so you can stay comfortable while sipping your hot chocolate or glühwein. A well-fitted jacket can make a huge difference in how you feel, so choose one that allows for some movement without being too bulky.

Layer Up with Love
Layering is your best friend when it comes to battling the cold! Under my jacket, I wore cozy long-sleeved jerseys, I didn’t need a thermal top but if the snowfall is expected to be heavy get one. Layers gave me the flexibility to adjust my comfort level as the temperature fluctuated. The beauty of layering is that you can easily add or remove layers to stay cozy as you explore the markets. Plus, it’s a great way to mix and match colors and patterns, making your outfit fun and festive!
Woolen Tights for Extra Warmth
Ditch the regular tights for woolen ones! These kept my legs warm while looking super cute when paired with skirts or dresses—perfect for capturing those Instagram-worthy moments. I snagged a few pairs at Primark, and they quickly became a staple in my winter wardrobe. Woolen tights not only provide extra insulation but also add a lovely texture to your outfit, making you feel stylish even in the cold.
Accessorize with Scarves and Hats
Bring your outfit to life with colourful scarves and knitted hats. These accessories not only keep you warm but also add a splash of festive fun to your look! A vibrant scarf can instantly brighten up your outfit, while a cozy hat not only keeps you toasty but also helps retain body heat. Did you know that a significant amount of body heat is lost through your head? So, covering up is essential!

Waterproof Flat Boots
Comfort is key when exploring the markets, so I relied on my trusty waterproof flat boots. They kept my feet dry and allowed me to stroll around without worrying about slippery surfaces. Look for boots with good traction and support, as you’ll likely be walking on cobblestones or uneven ground. Plus, flat boots are perfect for standing in line for those delicious treats!
Don’t Forget Your Gloves
Gloves are a must for keeping your fingers and hands warm. While it’s tempting to keep your hands in your pockets, I opted to wear gloves so I could fully enjoy the market experience. Whether you choose fingerless gloves for easy access to your phone or cozy mittens, having multiple layers on your hands helps trap heat and keep you comfortable while you browse the stalls.
Thank you for reading! I hope you have a wonderful festive season. Do you prefer to layer up during winter, or do you stick to one warm jacket or coat? I tend to lean towards layering, but I’m curious about your preferences!
