Arniston is a quaint seaside village located on the Southern Coast of the Cape, just a 2-hour and 35-minute drive from Cape Town. As there are no trains or buses operating to this destination, you’ll need to use your own car or rent one to reach this hidden gem.
Originally named Waenhuiskrans, which translates to “wagon house cliff” in English, the village derives its name from a cliff where wagon travelers once sheltered their oxen. You can see a photo of this cave at the end of this post. The area gained its current name after the wreck of the Arniston ship in the local waters, although some residents still refer to this peaceful seaside village as Waenhuiskrans.
Arniston offers a few attractions, but it truly shines as a destination for beach lovers and those seeking a peaceful escape from city life. Unlike Cape Town, Arniston lacks a vibrant nightlife scene, making it an ideal retreat for relaxation. Here, you can immerse yourself in stunning natural beauty, forget your worries, and disconnect from the pressures of urban living.
Explore numerous hiking trails and discover the unique fynbos plants that thrive in the area. You can also enjoy guided walking tours along the picturesque blue coastline. During my visit, I took a refreshing walk, enjoyed an ice-cold swim, and watched seagulls as the waves crashed onto the

Lovely photos Nikki! I especially love the one of you walking along the beach! You look absolutely beautiful! That’s what I enjoy most when I go to a beach, walking in the sand or wading in the water at sunset.
