Arniston is a little seaside village located on the Southern Coast of the Cape. It takes about 2hrs and 35 min to drive to get there from Cape Town. There’s no trains or buses operating you have to use your own car or rent one  to get there.

It was originally named Waenhuiskrans which translated into English from Afrikaans means wagon house cliff. The village was named for a cliff which wagon travelers used to keep their oxen in. There’s a photo of this cave right at the end of this post if you want to see what I mean. The Arniston ship sunk in the village’s waters and now the area is known as Arniston although some people still call this sleepy, seaside village Waenhuiskrans.

Arniston has a few attractions but, in my opinion, it’s a place for people who love the beach aand who seek an escape from the busy buzz of the city. Even though Cape Town is a very laid back city. Arniston does not have a vibrant clubbing culture. It is full of natural beauty. It’s the kind of place where you can forget about your worries and disconnect from the pressures of city life. There are many hiking trails and you can scope out the fynbos plants. You can take a guided walking tour along the blue coastline. I choose to take a walk, an ice cold swim and watch the seagulls whilst the waves crashed on to the beach.

Things to do in Arniston

Admittedly Arniston is a sleepy fishing village.  The beaches are pristine and never crowded which is a major bonus factor. People are friendly and you can take tons or brilliant photos without any other travelers in the background. This is a place to go to if you need to recharge your batteries and take it slow. And there are a few things to do in Arniston so keep reading I compiled a short list.

1. There’s the Arniston Spa hotel located very close to the beach. It serves seafood meals or you can have drinks whilst looking at the ocean view. Plus, yes you guessed it the title gave it away there’s a spa inside too.
2. You can grab your binoculars and go whale watching, the South Right Whale can be spotted in these clear turquoise blue waters.
3. Boats are available to rent if you are the fishing type. This service is available to guests at the Arniston Spa hotel. But, asking around should get you a boat. People are friendly in Arniston.

5. You can go swimming or just go for a walk along the beach.
6. Have a braai/ barbecue with your friends.

9. A bit of a drive takes you to Cape Agulhus the Southernmost tip of the Cape.
10. Go buy some wine at Enviro Wines.
